The Israeli army says they have shot and wounded a Palestinian woman who stabbed an Israeli civilian in the southern West Bank.
The civilian suffered minor injuries in the stabbing at a major crossroads near the Gush Etzion bloc, south of Bethlehem, the army said in a statement.
"Security forces on site overpowered the suspect and transferred her for further medical assistance," the army said.
Witnesses said they saw the woman being taken to Jerusalem's Hadassah hospital, where a hospital spokeswoman said she was seriously wounded.
Initially police said in a statement the woman was shot after stabbing a soldier.
The incident came as tensions run high in Israel and the Palestinian territories, after a series of deadly attacks in Jerusalem last month, and the fatal stabbing of an Israeli soldier in Tel Aviv.
Attacks carried out by Palestinians have killed 11 Israelis, while 12 Palestinians have been killed, including several of the assailants.
Israeli security forces killed the perpetrators of most of those attacks at the scene.
In July, a Palestinian youth was burned to death by Jewish attackers, allegedly in revenge for the killing of three Israeli teens by Palestinian militants in the West Bank in June.
A 50-day war that began in July between Israel and Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip resulted in the deaths of more than 2,100 Palestinians, many of them civilians, as well as 67 Israeli soldiers and six civilians on the Israeli side.
Tensions have also risen in past weeks over access to a Jerusalem religious site holy to both Muslims and Jews, triggering Palestinian street protests.
