A foreigner and an Afghan civilian have been killed in an attack on a guesthouse in Afghanistan's capital Kabul, the second assault of its kind in the past week.

Taliban militants armed with guns and suicide vests attacked the compound, home to international aid workers, on Saturday afternoon and battled local security forces for several hours.

"One Afghan and one foreigner, both working for a foreign organisation, were killed," Hashmat Stanakzai, spokesman for the Kabul police, told AFP.

He declined to identify the nationality of the foreigner or the targeted organisation.

"Three suicide bombers targeted this building," he said.

"The Afghan security forces quickly reached the site of the attack, and started operations against them.

"Fighting was over after three hours, with all three militants killed. Six people were rescued."

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed on Twitter that the targeted compound was a secret Christian missionary centre and that a meeting of Australian visitors had been hit.

"A spate of deadly martyrdom attacks have rocked important enemy targets in recent days," Mujahid said.

In southern Afghanistan, soldiers were still fighting Taliban gunmen inside Camp Bastion, a major southern base handed over to Afghans by the British and US militaries in October.

On Thursday, gunmen attacked another guesthouse in the capital. The insurgents were killed and no civilians harmed.

The attacks come a month before foreign troops end combat operations after the 13 year US-led war against the Taliban.

Kabul has been hit by at least nine attacks in the last two weeks, with targets including US military convoys, security contractor compounds and a female Afghan member of parliament.

Taliban attacks are intensifying as the US-led coalition prepares to withdraw most of its soldiers by the end of 2014.

At least two civilians were killed in the second attack in three days on expatriate aid workers' housing in Kabul.
