Germans have paid tribute to a student who died after she defended two teenage girls who were reportedly being harassed by a group of men.

Tugce Albayrak was punched by one of the men in the county's southern city of Offenbach.

She was in a coma for two weeks before her life support was switched off on Friday, her 23rd birthday.

According to local media reports, Ms Albayrak intervened on behalf of the two girls who were being harassed by three men in a McDonald's restaurant.

Local media said Ms Albayrak was later punched in the restaurant's car park, where she hit her head and fell into a coma.

Hundreds of people across the country took part in a silent vigil in Berlin on Sunday.

"The thing is, it could have been me, or my family, because it's a natural thing to intervene in a situation like this," said one of the vigil organisers, Cagla Ferat.

Citizens have called for Ms Albayrak to be posthumously awarded the national order for merit.
